電車でベッテンまで移動し、ロープウェイに乗り換え、ベットマーアルプへ上がった。ここから坂道を10分程歩き、ゴンドラ乗り場からベットマーホルン山頂駅まで上がった。ベットマーホルン展望台に着くと、ヨーロッパ最大の氷河（23㎞の長さ）のアレッチ氷河が目に飛び込んでくる。ここから氷河を間近に体感しながら爽やかで楽しく歩く、メルイェレン湖に近づいた。メルイェレン湖の付近は広い鞍部で湿地帯となっており、いくつかの池が点在している。ワタスゲの群落と池塘が織りなす美しい景色だ。メルイェレン湖から20分程緩やかに上っていくとグレッチャーシュトゥーベ（ドイツ語 の"Gletscherstube"）という山小屋風のレストランがあり、ここで美味しいスープを食べた。レストランのすぐ下から始まる長いトンネルを抜けると、ヴァリスの山並みに風景が変わり、フィーシャーアルプに至った。 このトンネルを通らず、フィッシャー氷河を見ながら大きく周回するルートも考えていたが、友達が前日の厳しい山登りで疲れており、短いルートにしようと決めた。ロープウェイで下りる前に、フィーシャーアルプのテラスレストランでゆっくりとアイスを食べた。      

Take the train to Betten and from there the gondola up to Bettmeralp. After a 10 minute walk though the village, you take the gondola up to Bettmerhorn. You get an impressive view of Aletsch Glacier right from the start as you step out of Bettmerhorn mountain station. Aletsch Glacier stretches over 23 km from its formation in the Jungfrau region high up around 4,000 m down to the Massa Gorge at its end ca. 2,500 m lower. Every year the glacier shrinks 50 m in length, but it still looks huge for now. 
The hike from Bettmerhorn along the glacier to the Märjelen Lakes and Fiescheralp is easy and short, famous for its breathtaking views of Aletsch Glacier and just right for people in the mood for an enjoyable, touristy walk. We took the short cut through the mountain tunnel near restaurant "Gletscherstube" after having a soup lunch there, instead of trying the routes over or around Eggishorn on the way to Fiescheralp, because my companions were exhausted from a monster climb they did the the day before and wanted to take it easy. Before we took the gondola down from Fiescheralp, we enjoyed an ice cream on the terrace of the restaurant next to the station.

Summer schedule: 8:00-19:00, every half hour. The gondola is operated by Oberaxen Restaurant, so there's nobody in the lower gondola station.
