このT2レベルの周回ハイキングは、全体で5時間半だけど、途中で「ウィンドゲレンヒュッテ（Windgällenhütte）」というアカデミック山岳クラブの山小屋に一泊して、2時間と3時間半に分けた。ゴルツェルンまでゴンドラで上がり、景色のいい岩道を登って山小屋に向かった。そこからは、劇的に美しいマダラーナー谷を見渡せる素晴らしい景色が広がっていた。9月初めには、山の上の方はもう雪でうっすらと白くなっていた。
ウィンドゲレンヒュッテの中には、周辺の穴で行われた洞窟探検についてまとめた分厚いファイルが置いてある。いくつかの洞窟には、山の中に複数の滝が隠れていて、600メートル以上の深さまで探検されたらしい。壁には、「これらの陥没穴に近づきすぎないように」という警告のサインが貼られていて・・・ もちろん、すぐに見に行った。迫力があって、ちょっと怖かった。山小屋の裏の小さな丘を越えたところにある穴は、どこまで深いのか見えなくて、足元がそのまま暗闇に消えていく感じだった。
それから、山小屋から20分のところにある、いくつにも分かれて流れ落ちるきれいな滝も見どころ。行く価値あり。
行ったタイミングもばっちりだった。朝には、夏の間ここで過ごしていた57頭のラマたちを下に連れて行くために、ボランティアの人たちがやって来た。飼育係が、牛がついてこないように特別な掛け声で山の上から呼ぶと、ラマたちが走って降りてきた。下山する途中、ラマと人間がいくつもの滝のそばを通っていった。
まさに魔法のような谷で、本当におすすめのハイキングコース。
This is a 5 ½ hour T2-level round tour that we split into two parts, 2 1/4 hours and 3 ½ hours, by spending the night at Windgällenhütte, a hut run by the Academic Alpine Club Zurich. We took the gondola up to Golzern and hiked the scenic rocky path up to the hut, which offers an incredible view over the dramatically beautiful Maderaner Valley. In early September, the mountain peaks were already dusted with snow.
Inside the Windgällenhütte, there’s a thick folder documenting the cave expeditions in the surrounding area. Some of the caves hide multiple waterfalls deep inside the mountains and have been explored to depths of over 600 meters. A warning sign on the wall advises not to get too close to these sinkholes, so of course, we immediately went to take a look. Impressive, and a little scary. The one just behind the small rise near the hut disappears straight into darkness, with no way to tell how deep it goes. There’s also a beautiful multi-strand waterfall just 20 minutes from the hut, well worth the walk, though there's no path leading to it, you have to pick your way.
We came at the perfect time of the year. In the morning, volunteers arrived to help bring down the 57 llamas that had spent the summer up here. The herder called them with a special call, so the cows wouldn’t follow, and the llamas came running. On the way down, we all passed by several waterfalls. A magical valley and a hike we can definitely recommend.
